The Breakthrough Addiction Recovery Approach to Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment Co-Occurring disorders are the presence of both mental health disorders and alcohol or drug addiction. These conditions are also referred to as Dual Diagnosis. Often mental health disorders are closely associated with alcoholism and drug addiction and should be treated simultaneously. One or more of these conditions are frequently major contributors to the patient’s chemical dependency. These often include bipolar, ADHD, depression, panic, anxiety, grief, guilt,obsessive-compulsive, post-traumatic stress, phobias and eating disorders. At Breakthrough Addiction Recovery, we help patients identify co-occurring disorders and treat both the addiction and the disorder. Many chemical dependent people have developed their dependency in an effort to deal with an underlying problem that has not been identified or treated in the past. Their addiction is a direct result in “self-medicating” as a means of escape and relief from psychological issues. Many people we treat also have cross addictions with different substances simultaneously. It is not uncommon to treat patients that might have developed multiple dependencies as a direct result of a mental disorder. We do not have a rigid or predetermined treatment plan. We evaluate each individual and determine what co-occurring disorders might be involved as well as assessing the severity of their drug or alcohol addiction. A personalized treatment plan is then developed for the individual that addresses their specific needs. During our initial assessment, we will make a psychiatric referal if we determine that a co-occurring disorder may be present.. After determining the client’s individual needs during the initial assessment, an personalized and unique treatment plan is developed with the input of the client. The treatment plan may include a referal for medically supervised detox, psychiatric evaluation and treatment referals, cognitive behavioral therapy, individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, extensive education on the pharmacology and physiology of addiction and extensive anti-relapse and aftercare planning. We also provide referals for nutritional guidance that help the client address any deficiencies of essential nutrients. Clients with co-occurring disorders are treated simultaneously for both the substance dependency and the mental health disorder. People dealing with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental disorders do not have to reach the extreme late stages of dependency to decide to get help. We aggressively and compassionately treat chemical dependency and accompanying mental issues and help people learn to resume productive, healthy lives.
